There are a lot of benefits to serving. The money isn't all that great. I would've stayed longer if I had gotten better pay.

Lot's of positives. I enlisted when I was eighteen for a two year ride. This was a very long time ago, when the lottery draft was in effect. For myself it was a very positive move and made a big difference in my life.
I was a bit wild at that point in my life and the Army taught me discipline and some practical skills that I still rely on today. Not to mention that I was never, ever, in better physical shape as I was when I left Boot Camp and AIT.
Careers are almost infinite. If you make a career out of the service there are many, many, benefits to be had. If you just go in for a few years you can rack up some pretty nice educational assistance benefits when you are Honorably Discharged.
One of my biggest regrets when I was in the Army was passing up an opportunity for a West Point Academy appointment. At that time it was the middle of the Tet Offensive, and my parents and then fiance' were less than excited about encouraging me to sign up for an additional six year commitment.
In today's Army there is a very likely chance that you will be sent to an active military conflict area. Scary stuff. Sure are grateful for the men and women who have, are, and will be serving for all of our freedom.
Look into it. It's not for everyone, but for some of us it works quite well. Good luck.

Pros:
You have a job/career that will get your respect almost anywhere you go.
Guaranteed paycheck 1st and 15th
Cant get fired unless you do something really stupid
What other job pays you to get in shape and play with guns??
Make friends and memories you will cherish for a lifetime
Make a difference
Free college while on Active Duty
Cons:
Deployments are hard on family members
Sometimes you work very long hours
The food can be a bit iffy
But, when its all said and done, the Army isnt for everybody.

The pros and cons are similar to the pros and cons of any job. At one point, there were 212 different jobs, but within the last year, they've merged some MOSs, so it's probably a few less.

Lots of jobs, good benefits, not many jobs with 30 days off after only 1 yr, lots of 3 and 4 day weekends, good pay, great pay if married, well taken care of if injured on duty (VA), good retirement after only 20 yrs etc
No real rights, do as you are told, going to the field for 30-45 days at a time, going to war, run alot, cant quit like normal job etc

Pros include high pay when your in the field, job security, plenty of options to switch positions, and in many countries, they pay for your education.
Cons include rigid chain of command, being bonded to politics, high stress, and lack of self worth. You feel like a robot by the end of basic training ;)

cons: they take over your life, they tell you what to do and how to do it. they even tell you how to wipe your ***, it takes you away from your family, you can go to war, you have no say in anything, they can make you do things totally unrelated to your job, everyone is self absorbed and out for themselves, everyone is a smoker or a drinker, those with rank can use it for evil, theyre obsessed with pt, the customs and courtesies are stupid, no one respects a private, its very stressful, you take **** left and right from your "superiors" they yell at you for making the tiniest mistake, they kill individuality, girls cant wear earings, etc etc etc
