Ignition Switch Symptoms

Parasitic draw maybe.
There are two parts what many consider the switch- the actual switch (electrical part) and the tumble (lock part).
There is always a small amount of current draw on the battery. By the car computer as well as things like the tuner memory and clock in the radio. If you don't start a car for two weeks these current draws can prove enough to weaken the charge in the battery. If you have added any accessories (like power amps, fog lights and such), I would check to make sure that these are wired in right before I worry about the switch.
To check the ignition switch you have to get to the place where the harness plugs in, unplug it and check the resistance between the leads.

if the key turns easy and you feel the little clunks it's probably ok unless you smell hot plastic or different things start to not work IE: radio or power windows depending on year and type of electronics, I had one that a friend used to jump start his van with and hooked the cables up backward and blew the top off my diehard, it shorted the electronics out in the distributor (this piece replaced the points) and it changed it to a positive ground. had to jump it off everytime it sat for more than 3-4 hours but ran great while it was running. If you have an electronic dristributor and not the block with plug wires I would check out that pick-up where the points used to be

Ford ignition switches have probably all the accessories running thru them so it could show a lot of symptoms, and it's true that could be the problem, but I would look for a short first, before I kept changing parts.

if you can start it off the solenoid then you look past the battery and the starr and the alt, this may require a mechanic..
