By the aircraft designation it is not a fighter; but a modified F/A-18 Hornet to fill the Electronics warfare role as they phase out the EA-6 aircraft. Since it growls by sending out false signal or jamming the enemy rader it is actually a very fitting name. Actually I always thought the A-10 Warthog is an ugly name but it was an ugly aircraft; that said it is also very effective and very very good for what it was designed for so who cares what the name is if it works? Not the people depending on them.

Well, the Growler is an ECM / SEAD bird, NOT a fighter...

Actually, how about the:

P-26 Peashooter ?
De Havilland Mosquito ?
A-37 Dragonfly ?

It's not technically a fighter anymore and it's not as bad as the V-22 Osprey.

The NATO reporting names for the Soviet fighters were probably the worst (I guess you run out of names starting with 'f' pretty quickly).

Yes. I would say that the height of lameness is the F16's original moniker, the "Fighting Falcon", but there's really a special place in hell for the yahoo that decided to name a combat aircraft after a big steaming turd.

name does not fight.

btw the Prowler still keeps its AA capability, though limited. because of it it can still be considered fighter.

MiG 23 was called Chemodan... [suitcase]

or the NATO code for Mig 15. I guess most of the western pilots spelled it with double g [the name was *****]

There was a Soviet Helicopter called the Hormone, but that name was given to it by NATO.
