Does wrist movement ever feel the same after the heeling process is complete?? If you have any information on this I would greatly appreciate it, my mom is having surgery in a few days and she's pretty freaked about the whole thing. They will be inserting a permanent plate/screws into her wrist. Her arm is in a half cast right now, and at this time she is wondering what to expect afterwards [IE: 6months/1year/5years/etc] My poor mom :(

I feel so bad for her

broke my collar bone

and i know it took a while before i felt like it was " mine again " if that makes sense

it took me a couple of years to get the strength back into it , because you just cannot help protecting it and using the other arm if possible

so the only thing i would advise would be to try and use it as soon as she feels comfortable doing so , it will help her get used to the plate

all the best
Ian

ps
tell her best wishes from scotland and a speedy recovery

thats a hug to make her better

I have a ten inch plate and twelve screws in my left wrist. You loose all movement in the wrist as far as up and down and sideways, it's another ballgame.
You will get used to it eventually, after about six months. Learn to wipe and use your other hand. No kidding. You'll soon learn to come to what you can and can not do with that hand and, it'll become part of you again. Good luck.

The movement of the wrist will be somewhat different, because you have to get used to the feeling of the plates there. It will feel relatively the same. The pain while moving it shouldn't be too bad, because she will be drugged up on morphiene, but afterwards it will hurt probably much more.

Are redness, stiffness and swelling part of healing after surgery with plate and screws

She should ask the Orthopedic surgeon doing the operation these questions. It's impossible to give an outcome result without seeing the films. Depends on the break. Where it's at, what kind of repair they are doing, etc.

It is impossible to tell...but to answer 1 of your questions... No it wont ever feel the same or be 100%....but it can be a lot better than it is now.It will probably be a year before it will be as good as it is going to get....assuming no complications etc..
