I have been paying $150 for my car insurance for the past year, but now my dad just told me that it went up and know i have to pay $250. Why is that if I haven't got into any accident or anything. Or is he lying to me?

Insurance rates are based on many factors, some of which are out of your control! If there are many claims in an area, the insurance company may raise all rates in that area! If your area is growing, or the crime rate is rising, then the rates may be adjusted!

For example, if you live in what was a rural area, and they have built a lot of new homes on former farmland, even thought you have not moved, your rates are now going to be based on living in a suburban area, rather than a rural one! With more cars, there are going to be more accidents and claims!

You may also have not qualified for certain discounts, if your grades were lower (assuming you are in school) or you changed other factors!

The other part of your question is bit of a problem. Obviously you are on your parent's insurance. If your dad tells you that you have to pay $250 because the insurance has gone up, you really have only two choices! One is to pay what he says, the other (if you are old enough to get your own policy) is to get off his insurance. To publicly say you think your father is lying to you is not a good thing! If you were my child, and I saw this question, you would not have to worry, because you would not be on my insurance (or driving a car I owned) for the next year!!!

Each time the policy renews, your dad and his insurance company agree on a new premium. Sometimes it goes down, sometimes it goes up for factors that are out of your control, they call that a rate increase. Usually though these are small increases (2%-15%)
Now, a 60% increase is HUGE. Either some changes where made in the policy, one of the drivers had an accident or ticket, or your dad is lying.

Buddy Unjless you have a bad driving record of too many tickets or accidents or worse by 100x with a DUI then if it gets to that point then contact your insurance agency and ask why they have increased it.If you are 25 yrs. old and have a good driving record then it should be coming down,if they balk at this then you might have to take legal action against the company who provided the insurance for you.Insurance companies can be taken to court for whatever reasons come about. Hope I helped you out.

Very simple to explain. If your company has had to pay out for a high number of losses, your rates will rise. Think of all the natural disasters and such that have occurred recently. The companies have to pay out a lot of money. To stay solvent, they need to raise the rates so revenues can keep them in business.

Its amazing that your insurance hasn't gone up before - I have not made any claims but my insurance has increased each year.

Mine also went up (a few years ago) and it was all due to something with the state. Tax's or something. I dont remember exactly. Call the insurance company if you dont believe your dad. They'll tell you the exact reason.

Did you have a prior ticket or accident that wasn't disclosed to the company? Did you add another or newer vehicle to your policy? Was a discount removed? These are reasons your insurance could have increased.

Otherwise, I would say your dad is wanting you to pay more.

Either your company took a rate hike or your dad is yanking your leg.
