If so, how do you keep your spirits up when people talk down to you as if they think you're a servant? (I've worked in many jobs working with the public, and there are always people who do this)

Does your religion or spirituality help you get through those tough situations?

I know we'd all like to tell those people off, but it'd be kind of hard to keep our jobs that way.

How do your beliefs help you?

I work with the public and for sure my religious teachings (Islam) keep my tongue in check. Must of the times, it's from the person's anxiety more than anything (I work in a hospital), so it's easy to understand that what comes out of their mouths isn't directed at me- I just happen to be more of an easy target for them to vent. Can't lie and say I'm ALWAYS understanding, but mostly I am.

A little over 10 years ago I had a job mixing paint. I totally know the people you're talking about -- they're the same ones who don't believe you can do your job either.

I had a grouchy customer once who asked for a match on a sample. I used the computer to match the color, mixed the paint and sent her on her way. She came back the next day and told me it didn't match.

So, I took her sample and applied a little of the paint to it. "SEE! It doesn't match!"

"You have to let it dry. It dries to slightly darker shade." I pull out a hair dryer.

Customer: "Well do you expect me to blow my walls with a hair dryer?"

... Ugh.

But I'll tell you this: It doesn't go away when you don't have to deal with the public in a retail setting. Dealing with other companies can still be ridiculous.

Yes I work with the public.
I don't care, it comes with the job.

I do not require the help from invisible friend in the sky. I don't think that delusions help.

Unfortunately everyone cannot be properly educated. I just do my job with a smile on my face.

for me it's rare that somebody talks down (semi public), but if so I remind myself that I am getting payed for being helpful. It's part of the job.
