Today I woke up and had severe pain in my neck. I'm assuming it was from the way I was laying. I read that if your pillow is not supporting your head correctly in a side laying position it can strain muscles. My neck hurts so badly now! I hardly can move it and if I move it slightly the wrong way I get this extreme shooting pain from my neck down to my shoulder. Can anyone suggest something I can do to ease the pain? I do not want to see the doctor for just a strained neck, and i already took Advil, so I'd appreciate suggestions other than those. Thanks much!

Try using a heating pad. After about 20-30 minutes, slowly rotate your head in both directions a few times then continue to heat for another 10-15 minutes.
The heat will increase the blood flow and ease the muscles.

You don't say what size dose of Advil you took but adult dosing is 600 - 800 mg ever 6 hours. Applying heat about one hour after taking the ibuprofen will also help relax the muscles and help the healing. Very gentle stretching of your neck will also help stop the shooting pain down your neck and into your shoulder.

Before I had surgery on my neck, I had a stenosis in three vertebrae, I slept with a very flat pillow and when it hurt, I used a fruit jar filled with ice, it took the pain away.

Get a new pillow and you can try some neck traction. It might help. The air neck traction helped me with neck pain and headaches. I use it every day.

Go & see a GP asap or to the ER. Did they do X-Rays last time? Please don't mess about with yr neck. You could of damaged yr spinal cord in the fall & one move the wrong way & you could be paralysed (worse case scenario of course). You only have 1 life so get help & live it well.

Before seeing a M.D or D.O. see a good chiropractor, especially one who graduated from Palmer Chiropractic. Physical medicine may be what you need, not drugs or surgery.

Most likely you are gonna have to go to see your doctor because you need muscle relaxants. It sounds like torticolitis. In the meantime rub some Arnica pomade.
