Milk is a world-wide commodity, just like crude oil, gold, or pork bellies. The previous answerers have covered it: the prices of EVERYTHING have gone up. It's kind of a domino effect...the price of oil goes up, so the costs of shipping go up, and the feed producers (cattle feed) must raise THEIR prices to keep pace with shipping. Lots of other steps involved, but you get the general idea.

In addition, the current trend towards organic, unadulterated foods, including milk, has caused a general increase in prices. The higher costs of "organic" feed, plus the additional costs involved in raising cattle in specific ways (plus other factors) jacks up the price of regular (non-organic) products.

The first answer is right and in addition the falling value of the US dollar contributes to it if you're in the US.

You should try soymilk - it's now an equivalent price (or cheaper depending on brand, size and form of packaging) and it tastes just as good (better in my opinion). I get Silk for drinking and cheaper Westsoy in shelf stable packaging (only 1.00 a quart!) for cooking.

Now, I using nonfat or lowfat dry milk . It takes equivalent as real milk. Also, if you have Costco or Smart Final they are less expensive. . I can't give the prices because it depends of locations and economy.

The animal feed costs more due to biofuel being made instead of the corn being fed to the cows - also, the price of gas costs more, so it costs more to get it from the farm to the store...everything costs more now. That is just the way it is...
