I have a pomeranian, he's about 7 years old, I got him from a pet shelter 2 years ago. At that time his hair was full and fluffy, now he seems to be losing hair on his behind, the bald spot seems to be getting bigger and bigger. I don't have the money to take him to a vet, does anyone know what could be causing his hair to stop growing and turn bald?? It appears to be very dry and scabby where he has lost his hair. What can I do to get his hair to grow back?????????

Hi
I also Have Pomeranian's and it is something Typical In the winter months I just spent about 2 hours brushing mine out last night and My One older female has the same thing
You just need to keep up on the grooming and make sure his hair is not matted and then You should be able to avoid this issue
Take Care

Sounds like a hotspot to me. Is he itchy or seem lethargic and sleepy?
Hot spots are usually caused from itching from allergies. The dog chews on it and causes a kind of rash or scab.
You really should take him to the vet to make sure it isnt infected, but for now, if he is itchy, some benadryl might help him feel better...for dogs the dosing is about 1mg/lb so a 1/4 or 1/2 a pill should be okay. But that wont help the spot clear up, you really should get him to a vet.

Could be allergies, mites, mange or several other skin conditions. Unfortunately you are going to need to consult a vet for a proper diagnosis. In the meantime, you can use a cortisone spray on the area and be sure to feed him a food with high quality ingredients.

I have a 1 year old pom :)... Regardless of not having the money to go to the vet.. You really probabaly should anyways.. there is a number of problems he could have. If you cared about your dog you would save up the 30 or 40 bucks to bring him in.

My first thought is allergies. Dog food is great for causing this. I have a Border Collie that is about nude in the summer months from it. I started feeding him a raw diet and that did the trick. You can go to some of the dog groups on yahoo and there are some for feeding raw food to get more info.

Poms have a LOT of hair. They need lots of grooming & care to keep up with it.
He needs a weekly bathing & blow drying & brushing.
He needs to be kept free of parasites - he may have mange or fleas.
There are low cost animal clinics in most cities. Just look in your phone book. They charge very little & are quite often excellent.
I have lived in three large cities & each time have taken my dogs to the pet clinic for their necessary shots & ailments & have been extremely satisfied.

Get him to the vet for a proper diagnosis. It could be anything from allergies to thyroid imbalance. Without a proper diagnosis, you cannot properly treat the issue.
It could be down right dangerous for anyone to suggest any 'home remedies'. None of us have ever examined your dog, reviewed his history and records, etc.
This dog is relying on YOU. Do the responsible thing and suck it up and bring him to the veterinarian. Borrow money, talk to your vet about payment plans, or apply for care credit. OR surrender him to a rescue where he will be properly cared for and treated.
Your dog should not have to suffer and should not be denied medical attention.

You know, Shelters really ought to do a finances/credit check before allowing someone to adopt an animal. I see a lot of people nowadays adopting and then when the animal needs medical attention, they say "Well, I don't have the money!". Well, then think twice before adopting or even buying an animal if you can't financially support it. Did it ever occur to you that MAYBE one day your dog will need to see a vet? Be a responsible pet owner and take that poor animal to the vet! If worse comes to worse, bring it back to the shelter you adopted it from and ask to see one of their vets - they usually have a nominal fee for people who need financial assistance.

If you can not afford to take care of him perhaps it is time to take his best interest to heart and find him another home. I know that it sounds harsh because it is justhair loss that we are talking about but what about if he gets really sick. If you can not afford a vet for this you sure can not afford a vet for a real emergancy. Think about it. Do you have this poor little dog on heartworm prevention? Is he up on his shots?

No money for a vet, yet you have money for a computer and internet access. You need to get your priorities straight and realize that this dog is your responsibility.
