I say that you just dont' show up and then tell them that something (family wise) came up and your apologies for not attending..
or
call that same thursday and tell your boss that something came up at last minute and you feel bad but you wont be able to attend
Because since its during the week and its in two days what can come up that's so believable that you can cancle?? nothing really i would find it fishy
or just go and leave early

Your best answer to this would either be call in sick that day, or let them know how disappointed you are that you can't make it but there is a family emergency. You can tell them that on Wednesday so that way you can act like it just came up.

Honestly, he doesn't need to know anything other than you're not able to make it. Really, it's as simple as saying, "I'm so sorry, but we won't be able to attend the party on Thursday."

Just explain that you are sorry you are unable to attend due to a family obligation. Is there a reason why you can't go. I could help if I had a little more information. Good luck
