It is for bridge style cameras, such as the Fuji S5700 and Canon S5 IS. Without a lens, I believe the D40 would fit. With a lens, it probably wouldn't. If I were you, I would get a bag designed for a DSLR, not a bridge style camera.

if in uk try jessops they carry a wide range of bags from traditional to swing round backpacks .they are having a sale at the moment.
take your camera with you then you will get a better idea.
