Gettysburg was considered the turning point of the war. The South never again fought on Northern soil after that, and retreated back to Virginia. If the South could have struck a decisive blow on Northern soil, it is thought that they may have been able to pressure the North into a ceasefire.
Antietam was the bloodiest single day of fighting in the war and Chicamauga was the bloodiest 2 days of fighting.

The battles in Kansas had to be the major factors as a division was prevalent. Quadrill Rangers and Jesse James dressed as a woman spied on the union troops movements. then battled them ferociously. Killing even children who were ten years and younger. it was indeed blood bath in the Midwest.
