I did a search for similar questions because I knew I had seen it before. Here is the answer:
Fred & Bob were stranded on a desert island and ate Bob's dead wife. Fred said it was seagull, but it was Bob's wife they were eating, hence years later when he actually ate a seagull sandwich he knew his friend was lying and he had eaten his wife.

The post that said this is a "lateral thinking" riddle was correct.
There can be a few variations to the answers, on these kinds of riddles, this is the one I found.
" The man was a shipwreck survivor who was told while on an island that what he was served up to eat was seagull and not being familiar with the taste thought he was eating... human. Then when he went to the restaurant and ordered Seagull and ate it then knew he had indeed been eating Seagull, smiled and left?"
Personally, I do not like these kinds of riddles ...
