Come on. What would you think if Ozzy Osbourne walked into your church?

Everybody does this. It's as natural as breathing.

A deep, deep paradigm we call carry with us is good = pretty and bad = ugly.

The catch is that few of us want to admit that we're really that shallow. I find many fundamentalists especially don't want to do the introspection this kind of self-awareness requires.

I would think it is awesome. Ozzy is a great guy and our church is full of Ozzy fans.

I'll admit, I do judge people based on the way they look. Everyone does, even you. Judging someone based on the way they look is correct 9 times out of 10. That's why it works so well. What's different is that what you mean by judge I mean something different. To me, judging someone is discerning/finding out what they are/how they live based on special markers. You could guess that because I'm a Christian, I hate gay people, or I go to church every Sunday, or I don't have gratuitous, promiscuous sex. I do go to church and I don't have lots of sex, but I also don't hate gay people. So that's where judging people is wrong. And I'm never afraid to say I'm wrong about someone. The thing I don't do is condemn people based on the way they look or even when I find out what they really are. When the Bible tells us not to judge, it doesn't mean we have to let people do whatever they want whenever they want. We can still tell people that what they're doing is wrong. The difference is that if we were to do that, we should do it with all love and sincerity, not spite, wrath, and judgment. For if we "judge" out of spite or condemnation, we condemn ourselves for everything we've done wrong.

Oh, and by the way, you're "one of us" now. You just put a blanket statement on all Christians without getting to know this one. You judged me based on a label that has been unjustly placed on my head as a Christian. Welcome to the club.

You're judging people based on their religion. If Ozzy Osbourne walked into my church I would be thrilled. Not because it's some famous rock star but it would be someone looking for a blessing and hopefully for him it would be a good change. It's hard to explain why actualy, but I would just be happy for him and hope that it's the beginning of something beautiful. there, thats better explained

I'm not sure I'd know he was Ozzy Ozbourne at this point.

This coming from a person who was a Black Sabbath fan in his youth and saw them in concert 4 times.

The truth of the matter is we do judge based on a way people look and all people do. To do otherwise is just plain stupid. We are to make dicernments. If you were alone in a strange city would you walk past a bunch of youths if they were dressed in typical gangster fashion and were acting out in a violent manner toward each other? Only if you stupid.

If a man comes in unshaven dressed in dirty clothes and smells of not only unwashed body but booze lets be honest is it wrong to assume the man is at least an alcoholic or at worst a bum?

If a woman comes to church wearing low cut blouses and short skirts and wearing way too much make up is it far wrong to assume that she is trying to attract attention to herself from the opposite sex and may not be living a life style in accordance the scripture?

However, neither do you let toss them out or treat them poorly but give them the benifit of the doubt and give them a chance to show their true character by their fruits.

I will tell you the truth, and I'm a pastor, I've seen a lot of people come through the door, Over 90% of the time your first impression judged on how they look (Not in a beauty sort of way or I'd have to nix me) is the correct inturpretaion. Most will put up a good front for awhile but truthfully when you have a fellowship meal every week with the congregation the masks start to fall off rather quickly.

I realize that this answer may not be what your expecting nor is it politically correct, and may draw protest from my brothers and sister in Messiah but I'm just being honest and frankly they aren't

First, before I answer that question, please don't generalize. Not everyone who claims to be a Christian judges people that way.

Second, I am a Christian, and yes, I would be a bit freaked if Ozzy walked into our church. I'm human.

But to qualify that,

1. My initial reaction should never dictate how I treat him. It should be based on the Bible's commandment to love others as I love myself.

2. We did have a guy in our church for a while who dressed like a weird one. He was entirely in black, including is long hair. Whenever I would try to talk to him and carry on a conversation, he would barely speak. He would lower his head so his hair would cover his face, and then stare at me strangely. After several months of attending, he stopped coming. I have no idea why.

This did not mean to me that he was less than, it meant that he was another human being who was worthy of the love of Jesus Christ.

Well, at one time I happened to look like Osbourne.
No, I do not judge based on appearances. They can be deceiving.
Before I got in a band and grew my hair, I looked like George Harrison. No one thought I was into Eastern religion.
Now I'm retired early, have a homemade haircut, and don't play any instrument much anymore...but I'm still Christian.
If you think about it, the disciples probably looked a pretty ragged bunch, when you consider their lifestyle.
The prophet Samuel went through all the sons of Jesse, and looked on their appearance thinking for sure each one (based on appearance) would be the King he was to anoint.
But God chose David, someone Samuel would not have chosen, based on appearance only.
In reading that, we learn that God looks on the heart, and shouldn't we also?

I'm Christian and I have seen far worse than Ozzy in my church. Who cares? I'm not there to look at people. BTW-where ever did you get the idea that Christians judge people
on the way the look or judge people at all for that matter? I

Hey, why do you assume I judge people based on the way they look?

That's a mistake, regardless of your spritual status.

Oh, and, we would love it if Ozzy and his whole family came to church!!!

Well to speak for myself, I do judge, but we are born with sin. I am not perfect, but I do accept people. I am concerned if Ozzy would walk in, but I accept him as a man who probably would want to be saved.

When I was a teenager I remember this guy with long hair, a motorcycle jacket, and who constantly wore tatty jeans came to my parent's church a few times. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but NOBODY spoke to him. Seriously. Nobody. During the part when everyone stands up and shakes hands nobody approached him, and when I tried one time my mom grabbed my arm and yanked me back to her. He left after a couple of months.

I could tell ya tons of stories like that.
