Depends on what kind.

For a simple pet topknot on, say, a shih tzu, then draw a line with the comb from the corner of the eye to the front corner of the ear, then across the top of the head from ear to ear. Gather up the hair into a small elastic, then fold over and put the elastic around it again.

It's really best if you can get someone to show you.

Maltese should have a double topknot, one on each side.

For a show-type topknot, you need to get someone who shows that breed to demonstrate, it's much more complicated.

Go to Walgreens (drugstore) and get some of those little vinyl hair binders... they don't pull fur.

Section off a portion of the dog's hair on its head and then binder it... some breeds have it folded over.

I'll star this so hopefully someone who grooms can give a more coherant explanation.
