Don't get one. If you are unsure or tentative when working with a dog, you are asking for trouble. The fact that you still believe that the dogs 'turned' is further proof that you should not own one. Otherwise, to answer your questions: They were developed for dog fighting in America in the late 1800's by a man named Mr. Colby. They were first registered by the UKC in the early 1900's. The proper breed name is the American Pit Bull Terrier. Most weigh between 40 and 50 pounds but it's not unheard of for a dog as small as 20 pounds and a dog up to 65 pounds. They can be very aggressive towards other animals, i.e. cats, dogs, squirrels but are usually good with people. If you want a 'dog park' dog or are planning on letting your dog roam, this is not the dog for you. They are medium-high energy, very athletic, stubborn and excel in many different activities including agility, weight pull and therapy work. You can learn a lot by attending ADBA and AADR shows.

Pitbulls are NOT mean dogs. They are some of the nicest dogs of any breed. They were bred for fighting, which is why they are used for fighting. But that dosen't mean anything. If you're not going to buy a dog that was used for fighting he will not be some mean killing machine. It all depends how the owner raises and treats them. If you are nice to it, play with it, and show it love, it will do the same with you. However, f you are mean to it, yell at it all the time, kick it around, it is going to fight back. But hey, if someone was mean to you all the time you'd be mean to them too! About the attack on the child. What do you think that child was doing before he got attacked? I bet he wasn't just sitting there. I bet he was doing something the pitbull didn't like, like poking it's eyes, pulling it's tail, orsomething else animals don't like, so the pitbull retaliated. That wouldn't have been the dogs fault, it would've been the child's fault AND the owner's fault for not making sure their kid knew how to treat an animal before they went and got a pitbull. My older sister has an American Pitbull Terrier and it she is one of the nicest dogs I've ever seen. I have one of my sisters dogs puppies and she also is a very well behaved and nice dog. The people who bought my dog from my sister when she was just a pup before I got her were mean to her, and brought her back and said they dont want her anymore because she wasn't mean enough... And she still is a very nice and loving dog even after being abused. So go out, find a nice looking pitbull, and let it become a member of your family. Try to find one that is a puppy and hasn't been trained yet, but even if the one you get isn't a pup, it will still be good. Sorry for the very long answer, but I just wanted to get the point across that pitbulls are not mean dogs =)

RE:
Pit Bull Owners: Do pit bulls shed much?
I found the cutest pit bull puppy at the shelter by my house and we are considering getting it.
It's a very lovely dog. The only issue is how much they shed.
Are they light shedders?
Thanks!!

Aren't you lucky to find a pit-bull puppy! they're great family pets - if raised in the house and allowed to be a part of the family.
Yes, they shed. All dogs shed - but not like a golden retriever or other "shaggy" dog. Their hair is only about 1/2 inch long so it's not a real serious problem.
Understand that your pittie will be kind of hard-headed (at least mine is) but extremely loyal. He should be taken to obedience class as soon as possible and keep up the training throughout his entire life.
Another thing, My pittie went through a really long "chewy" period - so you should take precautions he doesn't chew up electrical cords or furniture, etc.
My pittie's favorite toys are #1 - an almost empty plastic jar of peanut butter, a Kong (which he destroyed within hours), frizbees, and sticks. He loves to chew (still) on rawhide toys - a rare treat - and old empty milk-jugs which he'll carry around like they're treasures. But above all, he loves his soft, microfiber blanket (about $10 at WalMart) which he drags all over the house like a toddler.
He wasn't hard to housebreak - but he did have a few "accidents" here and there. And he loves to dig after mice and voles (we live in the country).
As for being vicious - hardly - what a wuss. He barks - and sounds "bigger" than he is - but he's a big baby who has a tail that can clear off a coffee table in 2 seconds - and can jump vertically up to 6 feet high to lick your face.
And he as "cuteness" down to a science.

Yes, they are light shedders. Pit bulls have been the scapegoat for careless/neglectful owners and home insurance rates are higher just because of them. It's an unfair stereotype. Sadly, there are pit bull bans in many states. Please consult wikipedia link to know what you're getting into. Once you take all that into account with your family and weigh the options, you can make the informed decision and hopefully have a loving, loyal companion for years to come!

They naturally have a short coat, they don't shed that bad. My pit-bull only sheds because she has a skin condition

They do shed, but not a whole lot. If you take the time to brush him on a regular basis, he should be fine!
Thanks for considering to adopt a pit bull! They really are fantastic dogs! They just need more people like you who actually give them a chance!
