It really depends on the medium used. Acrylics(which are water based) are cleaned and preserved differently from oils (oil based). Oil paintings need to dry at least 6 mo. so that the solvent in the varnish does not melt down the painting.
Tell us what medium, and we can give you an answer. If it's a water color, forget it. This is why watercolors are not considered "archival".

New info:

Since your painting is oil, it's a bit more complex here's a good link to follow:

I personally like the white bread method. I am an oil painter myself and am picky about how I clean my own paintings. Be careful with linseed oil, it too can act as a solvent.
Try a new coat of varnish (spray is easiest) to enliven colors after cleaning. If that doesn't work...it could be because the paint used originally was a cheaper brand (less pigment in the paint). Unfortunately...there's nothing you can do about that.
Best of luck!

The proper way is let a professional do it. Sorry but it is rather tricky to do yourself.

A painting is preserved by the varnish. No need to take further measures except keep it out of direct sunlight.

Remove dust with a dry cloth or feather duster. That is all you should do to the painting.

If you think a lot of the painting, and it is valuable to you, then you should probably take it to a professional and have it cleaned. You failed to mention the media of the painting. Is it oil, watercolor etc.
Personally, if I had a painting that I valued, either monetarily or otherwise, don't try to clean it yourself. This is just my opinion.....Good luck and God bless.....!
