I wondered cos it's given on Facebook as an option for how you met a 'friend', but what on earth does hooking up mean? Is it the same thing as casual sex?

I agree that its meaning is very ambiguous.
I would define it as this:
A physical encounter prior to any sort of agreement of dating or relationship. It may, or may not, include sexual penetration, and may, or may not, have been induced by an intoxicated state.
Examples:
Oh my god I got so drunk last night and I hooked up with that nerd from the chess club.
Remember that guy I hooked up with last weekend at your party? Well, I'm seeing him again tomorrow.
I've been crushing on Sean for months now, and last night we finally hooked up. We totally made out in the back seat of the car.
I hooked up with some chick last night. She was nasty!

That's one of its meanings. I don't think Facebook would have a "casual sex" option programmed into its website, but maybe I'm just behind the times.
Another meaning of "hook up" is to meet somewhere, so if you want to meet the person you've been stalking online for several months, I'm sure the hook up option brings up an automated message sender that you can use to arrange a meeting somewhere, like in an alleyway or deep forest.

No hooking up has an ambiguous meaning in college. Basically it could range from kissing to some type of crazy sex, it's just a polite way of talking about it with your friends so you don't have to get into the ridiculous details of what exactly went down it means different things to different people.

That's the general use for the term these days, but it can mean any number of things, depending on what you're talking about. If it was a guy and a girl 'hooking up', that's most likely what they meant...

In today's world hooking up means you were with a person in a somewhat sexual way. But back in my day if you said I'll hook up with you later.....it meant you guys were going to meet up at a designated time at a certain place lol.

some ppl say hook up and mean it as sex but when i say it i mean like went out together like dated like i say so and so hooked up with so and so and it just means went out. on facebook though i think it means like sex :) facebook has the wierdest options for everything lol

We don't say that in Uk. But in the states it means have sex
or hooked up means we had sex.

I think that hook up possibly means only having a one night stand and never seeing them again.

there are different interpretations for that phrase... and i think it depends on where you're located geographically as to it's connotation in the local vernacular... in some areas "hooking up" means making out... in others it means casual sex as you suggested... yet in other areas it means that you are officially a couple...

I think it means sex at times or when a friend just wants to go out. It depends on how people say it!! I think!!!
