"Us" Brits aren't "so damn picky".

My partner is British and works for minimum wage and so do many people who I know here in South Wales. Some have to work two or three jobs to make ends meet. Well paid jobs are few and far between round here, even for the well qualified. As a result we don't necessarily welcome migrants as they are just competition for the crappy jobs we need!

I'll admit that I don't get around town much, but it literally seems that every time I venture out I see another business packing it in and closing up shop. Luckily, BO is going to provide all the workers that are getting laid off from these businesses government jobs. What a relief!! Libertarian. Female.

Not so much 'picky' Elric as knowing that Britain has a benefits system in place. Nanny Chris - just to set the record straight mortgages are not paid when you are unemployed. This is where the system falls down - I was on Incapcity Benefit but told I could only get help if I rented my house not owned it!!!

I don't think we will ever know that figure, do you ?
There are quite a few Brits who know they can get more than the equivalent of the Minimum Wage just by staying unemployed and getting their mortgage etc paid for them. 'Migrants' will work for the lower wage because it's a lot higher than they are used to at home and they are grateful for small mercies .
What Graham says is illegal and in theory can't happen as tax/insurance has to paid by the employer even it 'comes out of his own pocket'

I doubt if anyone and that includes the Goverment Elric actually knows the real figure. And....even if they did do you think us Brits would be privvy to that information...I doubt it.

Unless someone has been resident in the UK for the last 2 years it is very difficult to get income support and housing benefire etc so working is more necessary than for long term residents.

There is also more casual and cash-in-hand work for ethnic minorities because the different ethnic groups tend to discriminate in favour of their own, eg Chinese in Chinese restaurants, Indians in Indian restaurants, Arabs in Taxi and Kebab businesses etc..

I don't think it's as simple as that. I've been reading the report at http://www.statscom.org.uk/C_1238.aspx and there are so many permutations that I think you can just pick any figure to support your views.

Probably around the same as in the US (and almost all socialist countries) - 12-15%.
