There are analgesic creams you can buy - some of them even work (not Deep Heat) - but you should really investigate what is causing the pain.
With a lot of back pain - particularly lower back pain, the underlying problem is relatively simple and is to do with your posture - either generally, or the way you perform certain everyday movements.
As you haven't said where the pain is, what brings it on, what type of pain it is, etc. it's difficult to say what is best.
Book a session with a physio, osteopath, or if you have an occupational health department at work go and see them.
Until then, if there is no swelling around the area of pain, wrap a hot water bottle in a towel and place it on the affected area for 20-30mins when the pain gets bad. Don't lie on it, though - lie on your front and stick the heat on your back!!!

Exercise, did the tree go up in one piece? Merry Xmas, but you are now paying for the Tree. You need to strengthen the back muscles, as when ever you use some, OUCH. We do not, well I do not put a Xmas Tree up except this time of the year, however I do exercise, try and keep all my muscles as strong as I can get them. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and prolapsed disc so am on Fentanyl Patches and Disability. Unless you really want to follow in my foot-steps, suggest you take up a exercise program. Fentanyl is 80 times stronger than morphine. Good Luck.

Hiya
I know what your going through I have 2 prolapsed discs!
I find a great help is something called Relief Extra Magnetic Patches they are great, at the moment you can buy them from Lloyds Pharmacy have a look online they are sure to be on sale.
Also Ibutprofen tablets are excellent, or invest in a tens machine.
Good luck hope it gets better soon, if not go to the doctors there may be something happening there.
