Please call your doctor on what to use for soothing his chickenpox but when I had chickenpox at age 16, my mom applied Calamin lotion to my skin, using cotton balls....lots of them. It helps soothe the skin a lot & will dry up the pox. Do it more than once a day, so as to make him comfy & less likely to scratch. The more he scratches, the more scars he'll end up with. Ask your doctor if there is something he can subscribe that is taken internally. I took something (the name escapes me) & it cuts down on the itching as well. Have your son wear light clothing, (cotton) as it will make him feel more comfortable. If he just came down with chickenpox yesterday, more will appear for a few days, especially on the upper torso, where the body is warmer. Hope your son feels better soon. The older a person is when they get the chickenpox, the harder they have it, so call your doctor now & see what he prescibes. Aveeno makes an oatmeal bath product that soothes the body. Check into that on the net or with your doctor. It will soothe his body & wash away the Calamine in between applications. Make sure he gets lots of cool liquids, popsicles, vanilla ice cream, etc. If he has the pox in his throat, something cold will help. Make sure you wash his clothing, bedding, towels, wash cloths, etc. seperately form the rest of the family's laundry.
Fragging.......What a cruel thing to say. No need for that comment.
Thanks "mullymom" I guess we're the only two who read such a cruel & non sensible answer. We both know that a person with chickenpox never goes out into public. He was sooo busy being nasty, he didn't even know what he was talking about. Sad!!!

Oatmeal baths are really good for chickenpox. You can buy them at the pharmacy, Aveeno is a good brand. It is called colloidal oatmeal, which is just oatmeal that is ground really fine. It is pretty messy in the bathtub, but it will help with the itching. Also calamine lotion helps. You can also give him benadryl. But if you do, make sure you use regular calamine lotion and not caladryl lotion. The caladryl lotion has benadryl in it, and you don't want to overdose him on benadryl. If he doesn't seem to be having any serious problems with it, it isn't necessary to take him to the doctor.
I just read the other answers to this question. Just to clear things up, it is mumps that can cause a man to become sterile, not chicken pox.

OATMEAL BATHS, calamine lotion, and give him another idea instead of itching.
one of the ideas that we tell people who get new tattoos as it's healing it will itch, so lightly slapping the itchy spots can help releave the itching.
Also distraction techniques can help alot. So anything that will hold his attention for a long time. What ever that might be.
Sorry he's got chicken pox thats no fun, but do tell him that hey bright side little longer winter vacation.

Oatmeal baths or calamine work great. Benadryl for itching. You need to make sure that his temperature stays down, though, because if I'm not mistaken it's dangerous for a puberty aged boy to get the pox. They can cause the boy to be sterile for life. Not to scare you, just make sure to keep his temps down. I hope he feels better soon!

Oatmeal! You can also put it in a cloth, put it in warm bath water until it gets murky, put your son in for about 10 minutes or so. When you take him out, DON"T rinse of the oatmeal, just pat dry and let the oatmeal do it's thing, it really helps the itching.
Poor baby, I hope he feels better soon!

A cool bath
calamine lotion to dab on the spots
aromatherapy vaporiser with lavender oil in
paracetamol for his temperature
don't let him get too warm
plenty of liquids
ice-cream and telly to take his mind off it
invite his mates round - either they've had it already, or they might as well get it over with - but ask their mums first LOL

calomine lotion. You can get it at any drug store. Use a clean cottonball to dab it on the individual sores and don't let himscratch because it will cause infection and scarring. Also the lotion will help with the chapped skin.

Soak him in an oatmeal bath. And call his doctor and ask about giving him some Benedryl perhaps.
And don't let him scratch! That will only lead to scarring and possible infection.
