I saw this study yesterday -- from the looks of it, they were making the data fit their hypothesis and didn't really have enough information to isolate the cause to fasting. It could have been a combination of other factors as well -- ultimately, the press release was a request for more $$ to continue their research to see why Mormons have lower rates of heart congestion than the average American.

I guess I will live longer then they will because I fast three days, once a month and once I fasted five days in a row, one month, I was trying for seven days, but I didn't make it, a person can go a maximum of ten without calling themselves bolimic, to get closer to God. (I drank water on this fast by the way).
If its baloney, its because all the stress from being a mormon or the curses counter the nonsmoking and the nondrugs, my dad who never smoked or drank still got high blood pressure, and cancer, my mom got breast cancer and died because the cancer went to her brain. So the word of wisdom does not work. I drank, took a few drugs and I have never had any breast cancer, and I am not a mormon either, I do run, but I don't drink anymore, I do fast three or two days once a month, and try to watch what I eat.

It's also because of a spiritual/physical health code we follow which keeps us from smoking, drinking, doing harmful drugs, and generally seeking a healthy diet.
I think there's also an element of how focused we are on family life - and there are lots of studies that show that people with strong homes and marriages tend to live longer as well.
So I guess it's a number of things combined --- I suppose we should plan our retirement funds to last for those few extra years.
Thanks

If they fasted every day of the month they should live for ever.

I think their research is flawed. There are many cultures who do NOT practice what Mormons do, and live long lives anyway! Mormons do NOT have the "corner" on special practices that are GOOD for you!

Like others said, I thought it had more to do with the word of wisdom. That is interesting though.
I would like the statistics about LDS women and suicide as I have been LDS all my life and have never known an LDS woman to commit suicide nor do I feel mistreated.

I thought it had to do with the word of wisdom. I usually don't do too well when it comes to fasting. I always forget.

Interesting. I thought it was because we abstain from smoking, drinking, drugs, multiple sex partners and generally living fast. I'll take it though.
