I'd recommend Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook - either the red plaid one or the pink one that some of the proceeds go to the Susan G Komen foundation.
It's more than recipes, it contains substitutions for ingredients, helps convert measurements, provides cooking tips, gives nutritional info for all the recipes. It's a great book for beginners.
And as for all those internet sites, I use them all the time but sometimes it's just not convenient to log on while cooking!

Since you have internet access you dont really need all those cookbooks. I do searches online and print out any recipes I feel are worth trying, then put them in a 3 ring binder by sections just like you would find in a cookbook...
Beef, Pork, Chicken, Veggies, etc. Some really good websites to start searching is
www.allrecipes.com
www.foodnetwork.com
www.recipezaar.com
www.cooks.com
www.epicurious.com
Good luck and happy cooking!

Here's a recipe I learned how to make in college and have been making ever since. It's quick and simple and very tasty ;)
Chicken and Broccoli Alfredo
Prep/Cook: 25 minutes
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
6 oz. uncooked fettuccine *
1 cup fresh OR frozen broccoli flowerets
2 tbsp. butter OR margarine
1 lb. skinless, boneless chicken breast, cubed
1 can (10 3/4 oz.) Campbell's® Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup OR Campbell's® Condensed 98% Fat Free Cream of Mushroom Soup
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
Directions:
COOK fettuccine according to pkg. directions. Add broccoli for last 4 min. of cooking time. Drain.
HEAT butter in skillet. Add chicken and cook until browned, stirring often.
ADD soup, milk, cheese, pepper and fettuccine mixture and heat through. Serve with additional Parmesan cheese if desired.
TIP: *Or substitute spaghetti for fettuccine.
Best of Luck and enjoy!

The Evil Chef was VERY impressed with the Better Homes and Gardens special edition pink cookbook.
I would go as far to say that it rivals The Professional Chef my culinary textbook put out by the CIA.

Mr. Food. His books have been around forever. Most recipes have less than 8 ingredients. Super easy and really good. Plus, his food choices are items most college kids like.

I really like The Best Recipe - http://www.amazon.com/Recipe-Editors-Cooks-Illustrated-Magazine/dp/0936184388
Everything I have tried from this has been really good, and they explain each step and why they do things a certain way.
