I think they're addiction prone people; addictive personalities if you will. They are always trying to regulate how they feel - whether it's reaching for a cigarette to 'relieve stress', or grabbing another cup of coffee because they want to feel 'up' and 'motivated' and 'need more energy'.
The good thing is you can still be very functional with cigarettes and coffee; more more so than a wet alcoholic or narcotic user.

Many are addicted to coffee and cigarettes before getting clean and sober. Yes they are considered the lesser of evils. Many though in time will kick these habits as well. One addiction at a time.

They have a need to be doing something with their hands. People who have trouble with alcohol or drug addiction often got into trouble because they were trying to hide from facing something in life due to fear or insecurity.
They are often nervous and insecure...at least at first...when they start AA and NA. They need something to do with their hands while they're having to open up publicly and face their demons head on in an attempt to go sober or get clean.
Coffee and cigarettes are legal stimulants that might, even temporarily, help them along from minute to minute.
Don't criticize people in AA and NA for cigarettes and coffee. We each have our own crosses to bear. At least they're trying to work on theirs.

Smoking is certainly not good for you or others, but generally people who smoke are capable of leading their lives. Cigarettes, although addictive, don't tend to alter a person's personality, etc. the way that other drugs can.

They use one crutch to help them escape the other. Often it's percieved as the lesser of the 2 evils. Unfortunately, they will most likely eventually need to give that up too.

they may have addictive personalities, and are latching on to coffee and cigarettes in the way that they did drugs and or alcohol. It is common for people who drop one habbit to then cling to another..

because it occupies your mind and takes it off of thinking about the alternative!! Just like people who are trying to quit smoking chew gum.
Hey...cigs and coffee is better than being an alky and doing drugs.

Of course it's the lesser of two evils. Smokers can function in society as well as anybody. Drunks have much less success.

Replacement is what I heard. alcohol and drugs vs. caffeine and nicotine...can't be just free of all because it's too difficult I think.
