Put the plastics in the plastics container, the glass in the glass container, the cans in the can container, the paper in the paper container.

Give your old junk to someone who wants it. Have a yard sale, put it out on CraigsList or Freecycle, donate it.

Don't use plastic bags. Drink milk in glass bottles. Use cloth diapers.

that's real easy. look first at what you throw into your garbage can. must you throw all of it away? can you find another use for it? (for food waste, there are in-the-house composters on the market).

can you demand of your public servants, your political representatives, to devise economic recycling programs of the true garbage that you have rather than imposing more taxes on you to line their fat wallets while they feed you a line that such taxes are "necessary" to clean up the world?

gee, whatever happened to those empty soda bottles that i used to collect as a kid to get $0.02 each back on, to buy penny candy? MUST we drink unhealthy soda pop from aluminum cans? aluminum is very expensive.

but know this: if you reuse plastic water bottles, be certain to wash them first in sudsy, hot water. rinse them very, very well with pressured COLD water to remove the soap/detergent residue. the bacteria in your saliva multiplies to the point whereby you can come down with pneumonia and die if you do not.

Check out Freecycle.org.. it's a worldwide network of Yahoo groups where members post messages offering items that would normally end up in the landfill. It's a fun way to keep the community "green" and get free stuff too!

As much as I hate to waste anything and believe in recycling, I was distressed to discover that plenty of towns around my area are collecting newspapers placing them in warehouses for a while and then dumping them in landfills. It seems they cannot find anyone to take them.

Does anyone know how much of the things we take the trouble to sort out actually DO get recycled?

I would be angry to find out they still end up in landfills.

Merry Christmas!

since the others gave good responses to recycle, i think i'd share with u the techniques i hv for reducing trash.. most of our trash are domesticated trash like bones, leftovers n tht stuff.. if u hv some land i suggest u dig a hole..a deep one n try to get a covering for it, n juz stack on leftovers n stuff em in.. it makes superb fertilizer... grow some vegetables while ur at it.. its a great way to bring nutrients back to where they belong.. n dumping domesticated trash only produce methane at the dumpsite n might coz lots of trouble.. love nature..
