Personally I like Lcd tvs better. With Lcd you dont get any burn-in like plasma's do. Also with Lcd the picture is brighter and clearer! Plus Lcd tvs are lighter and use less power. I just bought a Samsung LNT3242. What an AWSOME picture!!

I have to disagree with Kegger on the extended warranty.

You are in essence insuring a rapidly declining asset for a long period of time. Plus the normal charge for that warranty is grossly inflated. The retailers are often making well over 60% profit on it, as they quickly resell that warranty to the company that will actually provide the service. The service company usually only pays out 15 to 20% of each original dollar paid. In essence, on average, 80%+ of the average extended warranty dollar goes to pure profit. That means the TVs must be pretty reliable.

To answer your original question, LCDs are more subject to screen damage. Plasmas are more subject to dimming over time and burn in. Reliability depends on the circumstances of use in this case.

I have both at home and I did a lot of research into both before I made the purchases. I find that they pretty much even out with positives and negatives. I think LCD may be a little better, but with the larger flat screens plasma tends to win out in benefits/price comparisons. Either way if you plan on spending a lot on a good size TV I would advice getting the 4 year warranty. This is one of those few things that the warranty is actually worth getting.
