My computer's hard drive broke and i had to get a new one. I have a HP Pavilion 551w. I gave it to best buy to put in a new one. But now it's just a blank hard drive. A friend of mine has a XP restore CD and would let me use it. I just wanted to be sure that I was able to restore my computer, since mine didn't come with a restore CD and I can't order one from HP, believe me I have tried. Any suggestions are welcomed. Help me if you can.

Yes you can restore it with your friends CD, but the serial number is good for only so many activations, so hopefully you'll still be under the limit!

If this "restore" software is from a different brand of computer, then it might work. Many of these "restore" disks will only work on the make and model that they were shipped with If it doesn't work, you could always purchase an operating system (XP) and then download all of the drivers for your computer from the HP web sit. I just looked, and they're all there.

I know how you feel. Companies would much rather you buy a new computer than help you.

There is good news. All you need to make your computer run is an operating system and drivers for your components. This approach also eliminates the annoying advertising that HP installs on their computers.

Try your friend's CD. It probably works. If it doesn't, try to get a complete XP CD. I don't know exactly what your friend has.

Then, download any extra drivers needed from the HP support web site:

HP software download

Let me know if it doesn't work. There is definitely a way.

You can restore with any genuine windows cd. However, you do need your own unique license key, your friends wont work because its registered to her PC.
