Hospices are places set up to provide palliative care for patients who are dying of incurable conditions who cannot be cared for at home for one reason or another.

They care for the patient
- medical care for intercurrent illnesses
- symptom relief from pain (predominantly) or other symptoms associated with the condition (e.g. shortness of breath)

They provide respite for the home caregivers (often family)

They provide education and counselling for patient and family through the course of the patient's decline
