As a tool of escapism there is nothing that comes near to the superiority of the internet. It provides us with knowledge, entertains us, shapes our behaviour, allows us to be even more freer than we were many years ago in the days of yore.

Yes it is abused by some, but '“this instrument can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and it can even inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends. Otherwise it is merely wires and lights in a box.”

So could you live without it? Could you revert to the days of reading books playing sports in your spare time, socialising with humans (face to face as opposed to in chat rooms) and getting of your chair to order the Bill and Ted boxset, instead of going to ebay or amazon?

I understand why this question is in this category...

I would like to believe I could live without the Internet! I think it would be extremely difficult as almost all areas of our lives have evolved to include the Internet and its uses. School would be a lot harder, not being able to research things easily online, every store that connects to the Internet to process sales would have a huge adjustment to make, and there are thousands of other things connected to the Internet that we use in our daily lives. I think it can be done, but I also think that since our world has gone this far with technology and have adapted to it, it would be really hard to go back. The Internet is responsible for a lot of efficiency in the world, so it would effect everyone!

I agree with you, that the Internet is used for some bad things as well and many people abuse it. But I think it provides more good than bad.

Now, ask if we can live without the iPod craze, and that's a different story! :-)

I already read a lot of books off of the internet. I have an Xbox360 and a Wii. The things that would hit me most in losing the internet is email and the ability to look up information in the blink of an eye. I could certainly live a happy life without it though.

Yes I could live without the internet. I have lived without it for the majority of my life. I could live without a cell phone . I still read books (at least 6 a week)I could completely go back to life the way it was before all the computers and cell phones and not miss them.

Yes, I can imagine life without the internet - I lived it. And yes, I could live without it. Millions of people do.

(Hell, I didn't even have a CD player in my vehicle until 3 years ago..)

Acid Zebra - I hear you.. I met my husband on a local BBS running off a VAX that I accessed with a 300 baud modem... I thought it was SO FREAKING COOL when we upgraded to 1200 baud...

I think I could live without it. I won't have as many resources for a variety of things like I do now, but it's doable. I was fine when I was going without the internet a couple years back.....

Many times I find it difficult to remember the times before the internet.

It would be difficult at first, but I think it could be done.

I remember those days, much more laid back in those times, but to answer your question, yes, I could live without the internet

It's doable, yeah. Before the web offered information on things, there was the library. Granted the web does make it easier to research topics, but the library works as well.

Think I can live without internet. Maybe for a few days would have withdrawal symptoms. After that would be perfectly normal. :D
