I cant stand that. Its such a poor use of equipment and skills. I see it all the time and it drives me nuts.

Blunt... The idea that art is an expression of self is fine. But does a great painter use crayons and a piece of cardboard to make an amazing self portrait. You can easily set a tripod do the correct lighting and make yourself a great self portrait.
Mised mojo... I am a professional photographer... 7 years in my current studio and have never taken a picture of myself in a mirror.
I not at all talking about myspace kids.. that doesnt bother me because they are just kids. I am talking about professionals. I've these professionals do it that you may know.
Mike Larson
David Williams
Denis Reggie
Carl Rytterfalk
there are a ton more...
Saw the link on here ... I really like that one. its very artistic and edgy

GOD..... thank you SOOOO much for posting this. I was so close to posting this myself.
It absolutely drives me crazy too!!!!!!!!!!
It is sooooo tacky. I can't stand it. Everyone does it and it's just something that teenagers on MYSPACE do all the time.
And I agree with you ... it IS such a poor use of equipment and skills. GAAAAAHHHHH this is such a pet peeve of mine.
LOL I've taken pictures of myself before....... but I leave the camera OUT of the picture. Why do most people not know how to take a picture of themselves in the mirror WITHOUT having their camera in it too??
Anybody who takes picture of themselves holding their camera is obviously not a real photographer...

Actually you won't know when the average photographer takes a self portrait as the vast majority do use a tripod or manuver the camera as to not catch thier arm and camera in the shot. I think it is maily kids and people who have little skill who do that.

FYI, my daughter loves taking self portraits but in only one photo does the camera appear. That picture won beginner's image of the year in a very prestigious camera club with three top judges agreeing it was worthy.

EDITED TO ADD - here are some self portraits by some pro's. Man Ray did his share of self portraits, what do you think of the one here?

Well, I think your thinking of people on myspace ect., very few of whom are "photographers".
I'm not sure I would hire someone to work for me who couldn't figure out how to use a tripod and the self timer.
I don't frequent myspace, 360, ect, so I don't see it often, but it would probably bother me too...

Well I do it if I don't have anyone to take a picture for me and I need to send a picture of myself to my husband who is locked up in jail. I'm not photographic and I hate taking pictures but when you get put in the system any form of contact (i.e pictures) mean so much...
- Welcome back, and your hair looks cute today! :)

For the same reason you chose that ridiculous avatar there smart guy. I think you should just use the one's that yahoo provides, why do you have to go out and change it? Duh. Because you want to. I wish people would stop asking stupid questions on yahoo answers. There, happy now?
EDIT
And I beg to differ, (Kelly). I'm quite sure my being a photographer is safe from 'your' definition of one, depite my self portrait. Plenty of professional photographers take self portraits in this manner and being professional is not a matter of your like or dislike of their work.
EDIT #2
So, because you've been a professional photographer, in your current studio for 7 years, and that you've never taken such a self portrait makes you the authority on what does and does not make a good self portrait? Okay...
Like I said, I'm pretty sure myself and the photographers you've named are still confident in their skill given your "opinion", despite what work they do. Personally, I find partial desaturation hideous, yet cutesy wedding photographers have done work like that for years. It's not my cup of Earle Gray, but I don't besmirtch what works for others. C'est la vie...

Because art is basically the expression of the self. Do you hate painters' self-portraits, too?
