There are two booths -- one in Times Square, one at the South Street Seaport -- where you can get discounted tickets on the day of the show.

Actually, I didn't get that quite right. The Times Square booth sells only day-of-show tickets. The Seaport booth sells day-of-show tickets for evening shows and next-day tickets for matinees

Go directly to the box office at least two hours before the show and join the lottery or get in line for "rush" tickets, which are front row seats that are limited view, but at least you're guaranteed to enter and watch the show.
Also, some theatres have cancellation lines where they sell off tickets returned, cancelled or just not sold by curtain time and these seats can be anywhere in the theatre.
These types of seats can be bought for $20-$25 each, which is a fraction of what regular seats cost. Good luck!

Every theater has house seats that will go on sale about an hour before the show (sometimes earlier). Also going for single seats (not together) can often get you into a show at the last minute.
