At first, I thought that it might ok if they are using it on really really bad people, but after thought, I disagree with it.

They aren't necessary bad people, they just have a radically different point of view. I would want our soldiers to be waterboarding into giving information up.

Yes, it is a form of torture. I am tempted to say it is OK if used when absolutely necessary (ie in matters of life and death). However, who decides which situations warrant torture? It is a fine line between necessity and abuse.

Edit: I agree with the others who say that it is not even a effectual way to get information, as the person being tortured will say anything to stop it. Gues it is never necessary.

I am a Democrat who hold socially liberal ideals and who hapens to respect the constitution, the American way of life and believe we should follow the geneva conventions as we are bound to do just that.

1) This current administration defined torture as any physical force which causes organ failure. So, breaking bones with clubs, shocking people with electrodes, forcing people to eat feces and gargle with dog vomit, oh....just use your imagination because none of this is torture. Or is it?

2) Drowning people is not a technique for interrogation it is in fact simply torturing people by droning. There is no such thing as a simulated drowning. Waterboarding is drowning someone while stopping a little shy of killing them. Think of waterboarding as partially killing someone. Howexactly is this not torturing someone.

3) Why do you think the tapes of waterboarding were destroyed. Could it be that the so called techniques were really torture by any reasonable standards including the standards to which we are bound under treaties and international agreements.

4) The American way of life is not a joke or a thing to be taken lightly. We do not torture people. We are better than this. We are responsible for projecting truth and goodness, not torture and fake motivation for war.

5) If you believe that we only tortured three people you are quite naive.

6) Bush ordered this with his administration staff being in favor of this illegal activity. Yes, he is to blame and the Democrats who remained silent need to resign as well.

7) There are other ways to get information without torture. If you are all for torture then you need to be kept far away from any power as you simply have not learned what it really means to be an American citizen. All who agree with you also should feel less than American. Shame.

It does not kill you. It does not mame you. There is not a single interrogator douing it that has not been waterboarded themselves. It IS NOT torture.

Furthermore, if you were going to torture, it is ridiculous to say that torture is not effective. Here's why: You can play mind games with a person so that they have no idea what you do and do not know. For instance, ask him several questions, some of which you already know the answer to. Tell him you are going to go check into this. Come back and deal out some pain for lying. Let him know that if he lies, he will be hurt. If he forgets something, he will be hurt. By this time, he will be afraids to lie. Keep sweating him day and night and make sure his story is consistent.

When used in conjunction with other with whom he was captured and corraborating their stories, you should get to the bottom of it.

You're right. Khalid Sheik Mohammed wasn't bad. He just had a different point of view. Poor guy.

During WWII, Japanese interrogators used waterboarding on US POWs...after the war those interrogators where charged with torture and as war criminals. They were tried and executed. If we don't want that happening to our troops... as the nation who champions human rights we should take the high road and not use it against others no matter how despicable their actions may be.

Waterboarding is the child's play of torture. It's silly to be disturbed by it.I would string these guys up by their little bitty balls just for starters and mostly for entertainment. However, the information desired is in the enemy's mind. The best torture attacks the mind and leaves no physical scars or marks. But I wouldn't expect the CIA or the US military to realize this or be smart enough to practice it.

If it works and save lives in the long run... I'm all for it. They just need to make sure they have the right individuals in custody!

Geneva Convention Alan S.? If we were dealing with a country that honored that archaic document, then I'd worry about it. But beheading people on video... why should we care how we treat those insurgents?

I agree, all forms of torturing captives is bad. Its actually cowardly. To hold someone captive, outnumbered, malnourished, and jailed and abusing them. It is no better than the sexual predators out there who kidnap women and young children and repeatedly abuse them.

Enemy soldiers - POWs - cannot even be questioned according the the Geneva Conventions.

These treaties don't apply to enemy combatants.

I think there is something fundamentally wrong with our country that so many are focusing on making genocidal maniacs a little uncomfortable in order to save American lives.

Read up on what we did to captured spies in WWII. Do you think FDR was a war criminal?

Do we have a death wish? I don't!

No, it's not torture.

Living with so many misguided people in my country is. Especially if it ends up getting me, or my loved ones, killed.

It looks like fun to do and I believe that it should be administered to all that do not like the US and bad mouth our citizens and precious land, especially the hippy bleeding heart, tree hugging liberals! I'll pay to administer it to anti-Americans!
