First thing is first, you need to step back and take a deep breath. If you dont confront this with a level head it will be alot harder. There are so many things going on in a teenagers life that it can be overwhelming. Everyone deals with pressure in different way. Some in less healthy ways then others. I cut myself as a teenager, and to be perfectly honest at first it was just because i was curious. I heard of other kids that did it for reasons that ranged from wanting attention to being depressed. The thing is, cutting is like a drug. You do it once and start to like it. It is a way of releasing frustration and anger that your son doesnt know how to express in another way. Now i never cut my face, i did however scratch it and on occasion hit myself. But that is because i didnt want anyone to see the scratches and start asking questions. I wasnt ready to deal with these things out loud yet. I think you should see the fact that your son cut himself in such a public place as a blessing in disguise. I think that this is a way of him communitcating that he is tired of hiding his pain. Maybe he just couldnt think of having any other way of telling you. I think that you should take him aside and explain to him why you find this so troubling, dont be judgemental or lose your patience. You need to explain why what he is doing isnt healthy without making him feel bad about it. I would also recommend some sort of therapy, he should see a therapist to discuss why he thinks he may have started this behavior. You may aslo want to do some group sessions where you work on your communitcation skills. If you can keep the lines of communtication open he might not feel so conflicted. And alst but not least, open his eyes to other activities that might allow him to express his anger in more productive ways. It can be anything from painting to running. But some sort of outlet for what he is going through. Remember this is not the end of the world. This is just a problem that you need to handle in a calm and rational way. No pointing fingers, no over reacting. Just be there for him and this too will pass.

Before you do anything find out from the dentist his or her side of the story. Do this in a calm logical manner, no parental hysterics. There is a chance your son may have panicked in the chair. (I have grizzly memories of a girl running out of the dentist I went to as a kid screaming her head off because she was about to get a tooth pulled).
If the explaination is not satisfactory, then you'll need to contact the state government's dental licensing board or it's equivalent to find out what options you have where you live.

i also think you should ask a few questions before you report this dentist...
working on children is not a picnic..... you child may have moved while his tooth was being drilled.. which can cause real problems.. sometimes the little darlings can be just the opposite..
get all the facts before you act.... it may well have been your child's fault.... (I'm not saying that the dentist could not have been at fault - but i have seen unruly children)

The man who never made a mistake never made anything. Do not report - ask for explanation. If not satisfactory change dentist.

What makes you think the dentist was bad?
One time my kid puked - it wasn't the dentists' fault...
Another time, my kid got a fat lip; not from the drill but because the dentists' hand was pressing his lip against his teeth 'cause my kid wouldn't open his mouth wide enough.
Don't you go into the room with your kid? Did you observe something illegal or unethical?
