Ever since I've been a kid, once in a while I will see what looks like (for lack of a better descriptor) heat waves, but in the middle of the sky. They are in a circular shape and seem to be sucked into themselves in the center of the circle. What could this be? I only see this on brighter days, never at night, and both in the city and the country.

Believe it or not, I've seen this two (and yes only on bright days). And I wondered what it could be. It kind of freaked me out the first time.

Then one time I noticed that the effect was evident where ever I looked so I concluded that it was something to do with my vision.

I talked to my uncle about it (he is an optometrist) and he said that sometimes, in bright conditions blood moving through the capillaries near the fovea (tight group of cone cells in the center of your macular) can not provide enough oxygen to the cells there to allow normal function and the cells shut down temporally. This is why you get that shimmery effect.

You only notice it when you look into the sky because the sky is featureless and so these minute signal losses become apparent.

No disrespect meant, but don't you think you'd get more and better answers if you asked this in the meteorology or science section?

Unless you're hoping that this is a supernatural occurance?

You should ask this in the science section as they will have better answers than here.
