I've been trying to teach my cat to play chess for about four years now with no success. He can't even pick up the pieces, just knocks them over occasionaly. I've explained the object of the game and the rules hundreds of times. You'd think with four years instruction he'd have got it by now but no. Any tips please? Thanks.

Oh he gets it alright - he just can't see the point in playing. And don't try pursuading him with the 'it's a battle of wits to see who is the victor' line - after all, he's already got you buying his food, cleaning up his faeces and attending to his every whim!

You'll just have to rename the pieces e.g. King Prawn, Carp, Sea Bass etc....to make it easier for the cat to understand what you are talking about. The cat won't have a clue what you mean by Bishop, Knight etc etc. Always teach new concepts from what the cat already understands!

It's performance anxiety.I started with something easy like ker-plunk(a different treat on each stick). Then i progressed to operation to introduce a competitive element(you do have to use a bit of gaffer tape for this)of course you do need a bit of 'kit' to move up to chess so before i reveal anymore you need to purchase a pair of Velcro mittens(extra small).we do also have a specialist chess board as follows
pawns-stuffed harvest mice
rooks-moles
bishop-voles
knight-wrens
queen-starling
king-next doors guinea pig(ex)

GOOD LUCK!!!

You can't be serious, all cats do is hunt, eat and sleep. Why would they want to play chess?

I'm sure after 4 years he can play. He's probably just waiting for a worthwhile opponent! :)

Make your king a big juicy pawn. The cat needs some incentive to get at it.

Saying that, I have been trying to teach my cat Monopoly and it just goes to sleep on the board.
