I have been on his nutritional diet and doing cardio for months and have lost about 20 lbs., he now wants me to start weight training, I don't understand how this will allow me to lose weight. I still have 30lbs to go, and he told me these 30lbs will come off quicker than the first 20. How can this be???

Weight training increases muscle mass which helps the body assimilate fat. The more muscle mass the body contain the more fat it loses.

If your concern about weight training is increasing the masculine look which men obtain, don't worry. The estrogen hormone in women helps eliminate the potential to bulk up like a man. In other words, you need testosterone to bulk like a man. Though you do contain some, not enough to gain a build like a man.

Muscle tissue consumes energy (such as the energy stored in fat). So if you build muscle, you will be able to burn more energy during workouts and even while you are not working out (since more food energy is spent on the new muscle tissue just to keep it functional).

However, muscle tissue is also more dense than fat, so it can actually counteract weight loss, but it is still healthier to have extra muscle rather than fat.

I'm not necessarily sure the 30 lbs will come off quicker unless you step up your cardio routines. If it's getting easy then you need to push yourself harder.

When you increase muscle mass you burn fat and calories at a faster rate. It is just another step in your fitness program. Be careful with your diet though. I find weight training increases my appetite. Muscle is more dense and weighs more than fat so don't focus so much on weight. You will see a huge difference in inches. Now you have the first three elements to fitness. Also consider adding a flexibility program. Stretching, Yoga, swimming are great. Good luck, and get your own screen name. lol

Over time your body adapts to whatever physical activity you do, therefore adding or changing to your workout is essential. As you lift weights your heart rate increases helping you to lose weight. Even in a resting state muscles are working for you by burning calories. Keep up the good work.

Hi

I am a PT manager.
I am not sure that you will lose your next 30 lbs faster than your first 20, but strength or weight training is critical in order to achieve and maintain a desired body weight and a good body fat percentage.

As you ad a pound of muscle you will increase your Basal metabolism by 30 kCal a day - 5 lbs of muscle means 150 kCal extra burned in one day.

One lb of fat contains about 3500 kCal . You can calculate by yourself how much more fat it will enable you to burn over a longer period of time.

More , weight training , will guarantee you that whatever weight you will lose it will come from fat and not from lean body mass.

And if you pay the guy to train you, try to listen his advice.

Well, at least one answerer is on the right track. Weight-lifting will increase your strength and muscle mass. In and of itself, that will not make you lose weight, simply because weight-lifting is not a fat burning endeavor and muscle ways more than fat. What it does do is allow you to increase your aerobic sessions in both length and intensity, both of which increase your body's ability to burn fat and lose weight. That is why your trainer wants you to start weight training. Without it, you eventually plateau in your abilities to do aerobic training and will stop losing weight.

Edit: Oops, make that weighs, not ways.

A thumbs up to all your answers.

I think you have a trainer that knows what he is doing. Listen to him and you will tone and lose weight quickly.

Diet is important as well. Learn about your nutritional needs and take a multi-vitamin daily.

You're doing great!

See site below under EXERCISE which explains why weight lifting is the most effective way to lose weight for women. It has sample photos. It makes men muscular but it makes women thin.

It is good for both genders. Men do not want to be thin. They want to be muscular. Women do not want to be muscular. They want to be thin. This is what lifting does. It scupts the body, like a sculpter sculting clay, to look just like you want to.
