This belief that the Pope in Vatican City is Christ's Representation on Earth is a Catholic belief. Catholics believe that the edicts given by the Pope, like no birth control...etc. is given to him directly by Jesus Christ and is there for infallible. They believe what the Pope says supercedes the written Scriptures. Catholics believe that their church is the original church read about in the Scriptures. They believe that their sacraments, ie. Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion...etc. is the way to Heaven.
Protestants do not believe this way. They believe that following the Bible and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the way to Heaven. Protestants believe that man is fallible and that only through belief in the Scriptures, prayer, and faith and belief in Jesus Christ are the way to salvation.
It goes alot deeper I'm sure, but that's the basics.

The Vatican is a State with its own Laws, and up to fairly recently it had the Death penalty. It is the H.Q. of the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope is claimed to be the successor of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. How this can be when our Lord had nothing on Earth, no Home, No Money, etc. etc. And yet some of the World's Greatest treasures are in the Vatican, and also a lot of Wealth. I find this hard to accept as a Christian.

Vatican City is the last remnant of the papal states. They were given to the pope in the 8th century after the RCC came up with a falsified document from Constantin the great (4th century). In this document (Donatio Constantini) the central part of Italy was given to the pope. It might be the greatest scam in history.
Having your own state has some great advantages: you have a seat in international organisations, you have a diplomatic corps and its whole machinery. You will never be confronted with a hostile government. Nobody can check your taxes.
Vatican City does not decide who goes to heaven, though they came very close to selling places in heaven.
Catholic authorities rarely present the posession of a country as an article of faith nowadays. I believe one of the last times was in 1950.
It might not be a bad idea to turn Vatican City into a seat of international christianity. I do not think you will find many cardinals on your side however.
Have a nice day.

As the Catholic church is an organization, that requires office space, housing, places for worship, etc., they have to be located someplace physical. It just happens to be within Vatican City inside of Rome.
Unlike the Catholics, which are one huge organization, "Protestants" is a title that groups together hundreds of smaller groups - Baptist, Methodist, Luthern, Etc. So they have no one "worldwide" headquaters like the Catholic church. Rather each Protestant group has its own headquaters somewhere in the world. The Methodist, for example, have their "vatican" or main headquaters in Nashville, Tennesee.

The truth, or lack thereof, is not based upon a city such as the Vatican.

It is a state religion therefore it has its own territory.
Most Protestants believe in freedom of religion and therefore are not state religions.
Going to heaven?
No one has gone to heaven except the Son of man (John 3:13).
