Yes.

There are exercises you can do to get rid of the strain. You are straining on the high notes because your larynx is coming up and your swallowing muscles are trying to create the pitch. If you keep your larynx stable (like when you talk) then the muscle that control the voice have to work.

The best thing you can do to relieve strain is learn to sing in a mixed voice. When you sing higher you will notice that there is a point when it starts to get harder and you start to pull. You will notice that if you make it easy at this point you will probably flip into a falsetto tone. What you have to do is learn how to make the chords vibrate in that falsetto area.

Its like fretting a guitar string. The higher you sing the shorter the vocal chords vibrating length becomes.

I'm sorry to be so technical about it. That is just the way I am.

If you would like to learn more about this look up Speech Level Singing.

I could keep going but I don't want to write a book here.

the thing that worked best for me is just opening my mouth more. Open your throat a little wider, and while practicing just decide you're going to DO IT; your hesitation might also be hindering you. practice is mainly the only thing, and warming up quite a bit wouldnt hurt, either.
