NYC is a lot dirtier then most Europeans are used to. Even in London you don't find so much filth. I think a lot of Americans have become litterbugs which contributes to the stuff lying and flying around cities. The trash can is right there and people just can't be bothered to toss stuff in there, they just open their fingers and let the trash drop or float away, spit their gum and other stuff out on the sidewalk. For some reason, and I've heard this a whole lot, many American (not all) have this attitude that it's someone else's job to clean up after them--"that's what we pay street cleaners for"--but if they'd just use the trashcans and all, we might not have to be spending so much to try and keep things clean (forget about tidy). There's a lot of graffiti too--not necessarily dirty but you don't always want to see graffiti on every single thing all over the place. However, NYC is NOT anywhere else in the world. It is unique. I lived there and have lived in other large US cities and NYC is not like anywhere else (which I LOVE!). So tourists to NYC should be prepared for anything and not expect it to be like their home country or home city. It's noisy. It's crowded. It's full of activity. It's expensive. With so many people using everything, things fall apart quickly and aren't always immediately repaired or replaced because of budgets. NYers have a special attitude you don't find anywhere else which many people not used to it will find offensive. Years ago (and even still) Americans traveling abroad were called "ugly Americans" because so many of them would complain how things weren't like back home, expected things to be like home. Well, sounds like the same thing is happening to Australians and Europeans now. Personally, I love NYC as it is and hope it never never never tries to be other than what it is.
