What is at the heart of this question... is the mistaken belief that God's "Plan" is like a novel already written.

See...prayer is about asking God what His will is. It's about talking to Him, letting Him know the pains in our heart, and to ask Him to hear our prayers.

This question also forgets, that God, the One who knows all before it happened, even knew our very prayers before He created the first star.

And no...wanting to draw closer to God through prayer, is anything BUT a waste of time.

No, it is not a waste of time to pray if God already has a plan for our lives. First of all, Just because God has a plan does not mean that we will always follow that plan. Praying can give us guidance on what God wants us to do next.

Second, even if we are following the plan... it doesn't mean all details are mapped out for us. The plan may be for me to Interpret for the Deaf in Church but then that leaves a lot of area's up for debate. I don't believe every inch of our lives is mapped out by God.

Hosea 9:14-16 (NIV) (the prophet is improvising a prayer to the LORD!!!...) Give them, O LORD— what will you give them? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that are dry. (And God rushes to answer him on the spot!!!) "Because of all their wickedness in Gilgal, I hated them there. Because of their sinful deeds, I will drive them out of my house. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious. Ephraim is blighted, their root is withered, they yield no fruit. EVEN IF THEY BEAR CHILDREN, I WILL SLAY THEIR CHERISHED OFFSPRING."

God always answers our prayer even before we open our eyes, if we ask him “according to his will”…!

Jeremiah 16:3-4 (NIV) For this is what the LORD says about the sons and daughters* (*babies) born in this land and about the women who are their mothers and the men who are their fathers: "They will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried but will be like refuse lying on the ground. They will perish by sword and famine, and their dead bodies will become food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth."

May God’s LOVING sadistic pleasure endure for ever and ever…! and all of God’s people say, “AMEN!!! and AMEN!!!” Any Christian of a sadistic orientation will find a real Paradise in Heaven. The rest will just rejoice in the LORD… whatever the Christian think that is!

God has a big plan already worked out

That doesn't mean He won't allow you a few "perks" so to speak if you ask nicely.....He might even NOT allow something you really want if it might harm you in some way in the future.

He knows what He's doing

If the purpose of prayer was to change or control God, then it would be useless. If the purpose of prayer, as Jesus illustrated, was to change us so that we find, follow and fulfill his will, then it has a purpose.

Remember that Jesus taught us to prayer that "God's kingdom come and God's will be done on earth" (that we conform to his will). not to pray that God do our will.

No. Telling God what we want demonstrates faith, because we believe that if it's God's will, he can and WILL do what we ask.

I always pray if it's God's will, to let it happen. If not, I ask Him to show me why it's not.

He's never failed me. Ever.

Yes, prayer is a waste of time. You can do something more sensible than waste your time on that.
