I think he uses the force ... kinda like Obi Wan waved his hand and influenced the Storm Troopers because they had a a weaker mind. That of course works on weaker minded people ... notice how Luke couldn't influence Jabba the Hutt or Qui Gon Jinn couldn't influence Waddo, Anakin's (Pre-Darth) slave master.

Oh yeah that and he uses fear to motivate them because if they don't do what he says or fail him, he chokes the **** out of them with his hand and kills them, all without actually physically choking them.
