So you will sing, "If I had a hammer."

I work with transit buses everyday. I have never seen one yet where you have to smash anything to get the little hammer to smash the glass/plasitc cover for the door air dump valve. The safety glass mentioned in another answer. Although most of our older buses have tempered safety glass on the passenger windows (which can be broken with this little hammer as when broken, tempered glass goes into a million little nuggets) but the newer buses all seem to have lamanated glass thoughout the the bus (much the the windshield on a car, two sheets of glass with plastic in between to hold the glass together when broken). Every bus I have seen has a safty catch, usually on the bottom of the insider of the window, when released allows the window to swing on hinges at top of the glass.

You need the irony (hammer) to get through the toughened safety glass of a standard bus window.

Huh?
Every bus I ever rode on had clearly labled emergency exits.
Pull the handle and the whole darn window opens.
