Nice Guesses GUYS.....
Here's the Facts...
LOOK at your remote control and see/feel the keys...each one of them....ESPECIALLY the power button....UNUSED keys always have that NEW "REMOTE button" feel to them and you can use it to compare it to the power button.
And you KNOW that power button is the most highly used button on the remote....
So you can compare it, and you will find out HOW BAD your power button is....
Now, if it feels like it is in Good shape, put it in a drawer While watching TV and see if your TV still ON/OFFS all by itself.....
THEN you check the front panel POWER button to see if it's sticking......
And if pressing it unjams it, great....you just fixed your problem.
Sometimes those front keys can get weak too....
Lastly, it's rare, but it can happen....The remote Infra-red reciever can generate noise, and that noise can be mistaken as a power on/off command from the remote....
That's why you put it in a drawer after checking for stuck buttons/worn out buttons, To isolate and separate it from the TV set while checking for that ON/OFF problem.
Now, why didn't anybody suggest a list of troubleshooting STEPS???
Huh? Why?
Probably because NONE of them are TV TECHs.....

You can figure this out by some trial and error problem solving. First, remove the batteries in your remote to rule out a stuck or intermittent button. If it stops you have found your problem in the remote. If it still does it, put something thick in front of the remote sensor on the TV, like a block of wood or a book. If it stops then it is not a problem with the TV. Something external is doing it either in your house or from outside. If it still does it, then the remote sensor in the tv may be faulty. You will either just have to live with it and see if it corrects itself or replace. It is possible you could see if discharging the TV transformer of power would fix it, but that takes 2 weeks or more of being unplugged to do it.

RE:
Why does my tv turn on and off by itself?
It will randomly come on and off whenever it feels like it. This used to happen to my other tv when I was younger, but it eventually stopped. I believe it was the remote frequency...someone in the my old neighborhood had the same remote frequency for my tv, so it would turn on and off on their...

1. Bad remote sensor/remote control module inside of TV
2. Flourescent lamp inside the same room as the TV is blinking red and causing a sensitive infared remote sensor to turn the set on and off - rare but it happens - means you need to address item 1.
Item 1 - May not be user serviceable. Get an estimate for repair.
Item 2 - replace the lamp and see if the problem goes away.

the tv is more likely to have developed a fault and the protection circuits are pushing the tv into standby in order to protect it from further damage

Mine does the same but I think it s due to the remote rather than the tv, nothing I do makes a difference.

Because one of your neighbors has a remote control that can operate your TV.
TV remotes can generally operate any tv.
They are not programed for just one specific tv.
So more than likely, a stray signal is coming in thru your window.
