The B-24 became a extra suitable bomber than the B-17, interior a similar way that the hurricane became a extra suitable fighter than the Spitfire. some airplanes seize the commonplace mind's eye in simple terms like autos do - for no specific reason different than form. provide me a call and that i'll take a B-29 or a P-fifty one (or, an Me-262, genuine marked!)

The B-29 carried the heaviest load in routine operations. There were some examples of special operations carrying equal or heavier loads with other aircraft. The "grand slam," mentioned above, is a good example.

The Arvo Lancaster carried the 22,000 pound "Grand Slam" bomb on sevral occasions. The B-29 could also carry 22,000 pounds of bombs (internal and external) but I don't know if it actually carried that much in normal operations in WW2, as carrying a full bomb load would cut into it's range.

In terms of payload per crew, the Mosquito carried the most. So in terms of lives lost per tonne delivered it rated much higher than any of the US aircraft (but it has to be remembered that they were on day operations).
Of course, in terms of destructive power, then the atom boms win out.
