Dry skin and coat is usually caused by a diet low in fat and oils. Increase the protein and put a little fish oil into the food. I also suggest a scrambled egg mixed into the food about two or three times a week for three weeks. Brush the coat often to stimulate the oil glands and remove the dead hair.

I agree with the fish oil- remember to get a fish oil rather than a fish cod liver oil coz I have been told that Cod liver oil can cause issues.
I wouldjust give 1-2 teaspoons per week, mixed in to her food to see how she likes it- she might hate it but then you can have it so it won't be a waste.
What are you using to wash her? And how often do you wash her? Given her skin condition, I might use malaseb or Pyohex shampoo. See the link below for examples and see which one is more matching for your dog.

I suggest seeing another vet int he future coz to prescribe soap (I assume you mean a bar of soap) just doesn't sound right. You shoudl be using special shampoo. Try that and see how you go.
What are you feeding your dog? Maybe the diet doesn't suit her. Wouldn't hurt to feed her boil chicken (no bones pls) and white rice for a while.
If using the shampoo for say 3 wks and yet you still see no improvement then I recommend seeing another vet.
Good luck

My dog has this problem sometimes too, with bad bad breath and body odor. He's allergic to corn. I feed him a food that either doesn't have ground yellow corn in the ingredients or at least it's fairly low on the list. That solves his problem. Also an egg & some olive oil on her food each day should improve her skin condition. If it's not a food allergy, it may be a flea allergy.

You need to give the dog a good brushing every day to release the natural oils in it's skin. The cold weather and the heating in your home will dry out the skin.Look at the dogs diet too.Ask your vet advice on giving cod liver oil or oily fish.

Poor itchy dog - sorry to hear your dog is having skin issues! I have a minipin which has very dry skin (especially in winter). She is eating a diet of Wellness dog food, and gets two squirts of salmon oil a day in her food dish. The salmon oil helps, as well as the diet, but she still has flaky skin, like your dog. We usually use a dog skin moisturizer by Tomlyna Nova http://www.terrificpets.com/pet_supplies/dog/grooming/conditioners/102858.asp
It really helps with her itchy skin. In combination with the salmon oil, Wellness diet and the spray, she's much more comfortable in the winter months. You should give it a try.

If hte soap hasn't worked I would suggest calling the vet or possibly seeking a second opinion. this kind of dry skin is not normal wher seh should be bleeding.
It sounds like she may also have a skin infection that may need to be treated as well.

Try a all natural dog food that is wheat free. Wheat causes many problems in dogs as well as humans. If your dog has dry skin it is probably an allergic reaction to its food. You can find wheat free dog food in a good pet store. Give this a try, I really think it will work.

Ooh, Sadie gets this problem, too (especially in the winter). I started adding brewer's yeast to her kibble, and she gets fish oil twice a day (she's good at pills, but you can just put it in the food, if your dog isn't). Her skin is better and her coat is super shiny (but watch out for the farts).

it's probably just due to dry skin and the winter weather. Go to your pet store and get a special kind of shampoo for dry skin. And just follow the instructions on the bottle.
