Just like Death Valley, in the USA and Lake Eyre, in Australia, The Dead Sea is at the centre (Australian spelling) of a drainage basin and is lower than sea level. These areas receive water but into them but do not have water flow from them. Water gets away only by evaporation. Only water evaporates.

The water, on its way to the Dead Sea, picks up soluble materials. These are left behind when the water evaporates. Over millennia this has caused the sea to become so salty that very little life can survive in it.

The whole area had a great subsidence at the time Sodom was destroyed. Whether this was the techtonic event that caused the formation of this sea, I know not.

The Dead Sea is called so because of its salinity: the amount of salt dissolved in it (more than 30%). Only specialized microbial life survives in its waters. The ancients who named the sea were not equipped to observe microscopic life, and thus were correct to name it so. The scientific name for such waters is hypersaline lakes: examples in the U.S.A. include Great Salt Lake, Utah and Mono Lake, California.

And the reason it died is it has no outlet. All water that arrives simply pools up and evaporates, leaving behind the minerals. Of course, better get there now as it will soon be completely gone -- its two sources are rainwater and the Jordan River. Israel has been diverting the Jordan completely for human use, and rain is not enough to sustain it.

It is called the "dead" sea due to the fact that aquatic life can't live in it.

The salt content is much higher than in the oceans. There are almost no fish in it because of that.
