Militarily we have never lost a war. Part of this is due to national wealth and the technology it can purchase and develop. But much is also due to industrial power.
Winning a war is largely a matter of winning on a battlefield, but it is also about pursuing the conflict to a suitable political end. We were unable to do that in Korea because (1) it was a UN conflict, and (2) it was a limited war.
We politically lost the war in Vietnam because the enemy there managed to sell the U.S. media on the idea the war was lost. We also conducted Vietnam as a limited war and never defined what a victory would entail. You can't fight a war without an objective.
I think in Iraq and Afghanistan we have a well-enough defined objective, but in Iraq there were some serious errors in the intelligence we needed to have to win. There was inadequate information about the weapons of mass destruction, which may or may not have existed--unfortunately the intelligence community doesn't really know for sure either way. We also needed a larger force going in and we needed to establish military control immediately.
These failures, plus the betrayal by the national media, may cost us this war as well.
By the way, I work in media.
I am also a veteran. I think one of America's greatest military strengths is the emphasis on leadership at lower levels in our Armed Forces. In many armies in the world tactical decisions are made by generals. In our services NCO's can make them, and that leads to a very responsive military force.
American soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines are taught to make responsible decisions and execute them. Mistakes might be made from time to time, but usually this means our services are very difficult to defeat in the field.

We have the world's biggest military budget by far. So we have a huge advantage in financing things like intelligence, weaponry, and vehicles. I really don't think that we were an underdog in much of anything other than the American Revolution.
As for these modern wars, you can't really win in the traditional sense. Sure, you can destroy most of your opposing forces, but as long as the ideology they stand for remains strong they can always recruit more. Also, in modern warfare, the only way for the underdog to make progress is to fight dirty, so many people disregard civilian casualties and may even pose as a civilian.
That said, I really don't know why we're fighting wars any more. People know we have the technology to annihilate any enemy if we so choose; that's why the cold war was such a standoff. Physically engaging us is an exercise in futility EXCEPT for small groups who are able to fight dirty. When there's no hill we can storm or dictator that we can capture, we're left simply defending ourselves against a ghost force. We need to be able to show our sword without actually using it all the time. Maybe I'm ignorant, but I think that our aggressive use of military force in our foreign policy is what created the desire to attack us.

God there are many ignorant & just flat out stupid answers in here. First off, one side always wins the war. Just stating that all the casualties & wounded as making it a loss for each side is just stupid. You would think that since all of our technology & way of thinking on other things eveolve that people would except the fact that war is war & its never nice & yes, there are winners. Second, the Iraq war is not over & we are winning. Its also the retards that say its lost & we are not winning are the idiots that lost nam, not the military. None of you know what war winning this war is, but the people who are their fighting in it & living it day in day out do. You think were oppressive invaders? than why is it people lined up to vote, join the police forces & Iraqi army knowing that insurgents were suicide bombing them knowing just to stand in line at these places or just be around them they could die. Because they knew they wanted a better place to live so they acted & the coalition is in their giving them that chance. & Im sorry this isnt all happy go lucky war for the rest who know nothing of the real word but sometimes to help rebuild a country you need to sacrafice some blood, sweat, & tears. We made a commitment to help them & regardless of the gullible who gobble down the liberal BS, the true hero that are in that nation right now are sticking to their morals & to their duty that they promised to do for a nation.
Heres a thing all you anti-war liberals can do, just for once think about were your information id coming from. People who when this started were behind it 100% then when it seemed to take to long to their liking they lost interest & labeled it a unpopular war. Thats rediculas, war is not a popularity contest (yet the very peoples information that you so regurgitate like a drunk frat boy at a stag party) use it for their popularity. They look at the people & see they are getting a little weiry of the war & they pounced on you with, "HEY! Look at me, I dont like the war!" "Like me!" Yeah thats crude example but it makes sense 7 is straight to the point.

The United States has not won every war it has become involved in. However, it does not lose wars it is allowed to fight in the manner it's force commanders dictate. The whole problem with war is, it is made necessary by politics and people that do not understand the devastation necessary to get it finished. A successful fighting force kills people and breaks essential things beyond repair. Civilians are a part of this and cannot be excluded. It is too bad that this is true, but facts cannot be excluded from arguments.

I dont know what to say. The United States hasn't been always "kicking butt". The US picks the enemies it wishes to fight because over history it has fought mostly agressive wars. Esp. against the Natives of this continent. Check your facts!
You need to realize war is merely a tool of a politician to achieve his/her wants. Vietnam was bound to be lost. The United States had no means to destroy the nationalist needs of Communist Vietnamese who'd been fighting since 1954. Same as Korea.
I think you should get used to the idea that the United States will lose more conflicts as it seeks to extend its influence and tries to garner vassal states like Iraq around the globe

When was the last time you last fought an equal country?
Countries like England, Germany, Spain, Russia, Italy, have all been around for hundreds of years, far longer than the US can ever imagine, and have fought countless wars against eachother and against countries with equal strength and passion.
Every war you've 'won' , there's either been a large amount of support from other nations, or a lack of will and want from the otherside. (You really think a few guys in a couple of boat was the strength of the British army in your little scrap for independance)
And helping other countries with thier own disputes doesn't count as a war, not that you 'won' korea or vietnam for that matter, and you still haven't exactly 'won' afghanistan or iraq.
The world wars were a joint effort, so they're void.
I don't disrespect America, you have an insanely powerful country, but you haven't seen any real wars on your own. You've only just surfaced on the map of the world in the history of man.
Until you do something worthwhile like take out Sta-..Putin... I don't care.

you are an embarrassment to this country. The value and pride of a nation should not be judged by the wars it has fought but by the wars it was able to prevent through intelligent means. The US would be much better as a world leader if it stopped fighting wars and stayed out of the other countries affairs especially in the third world like "nam" and Iraq.

You know you talk nonsense no country alone can win a war , it is always done with a support of other allies,
wining a war dose not mean going in a country and blasting every one to pieces that is not wining ,
because you know nothing about wars i will not waist to much time with you
Wining a war means getting rid of a bad regime and wining the hearts and minds of the people at home and abroad, to day any body can drop a atom bomb and destroy a whole nation
God forbid it can even happen to America ,, so don't be to proud of wars , grow up a little

We don't always win wars.
But for the ones we did win, in truth it has to do with our location. The only two countries capable of dealing a huge blow to us (even if we wind up beating them they could still do damage before they went) are on our side. Specifically Mexico and Canada. They are our allies. And all other countries have to go over some oceans before they can attack us. If you want to include Cuba (an enemy) as a country that could hit us, I'll give you that. But Cuba is too small to really matter anymore.
The only two times an enemy made it to our shores though, we got help. Britian got to our shores in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Both times we got French help. We did a lot, but we didn't do it alone.
And it wouldn't hurt to be reminded of the fact that, though we saved the French during both World Wars, we are only here because they saved our *sses in our first two wars. So it wouldn't hurt us to be more accepting of them, we are here because of them just like they are here because of us.

Technically: The Korean Conflict is on-going, and is not a declared war. The Vietnam War was not a declared war at the time of American involvement, we did not lose that war, since it wasn't a 'war' at the time.
America doesn't lose wars, why should we? America wants to win, and we have the heart to win.
Russia did not end WWII simply by entering Berlin. WWII was ended through the combined efforts of the Allied forces.
For those from the UK who think you were doing fine without American involvement:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Dunkirk
http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/timeline/ww2time.htm
We needed each other in that war. We helped each other in that war. We need to regain that mutal support in all conflicts present and future. We need each other to stand against our mutual enemies.
