I read a question posted that asked why homosexuality is wrong, requesting that religious reasons be omitted as homosexuality is a social issue and not a religious one.

I saw some of answers that pertained to the dangers of anal sex, but this is not synonymous with homosexuality, nor is it even exclusively homosexual in nature.

So I would like to ask the question myself: without resorting to religious reasons, why is homosexuality wrong?

And I would like to clarify that homosexuality is NOT: homosexual sex, anal sex, oral sex, bestiality, rape of any kind, nor any other kind of sexual activity.

Homosexuality IS: an instinctual, undeniable personal attraction to human members of the same sex as oneself.

I forgot to also clarify that homosexuality causes no greater danger to human population than sterile heterosexuals or asexuals (people who abstain completely from sex out of personal preference)...or eunuchs.

In fact, they pose even less of a threat as many homosexual people marry heterosexually, and many of those even produce offspring.

Some people also seem to be forgetting about our lesbian population!

Men aren't the only homosexuals you know! ;)

Last edit, I promise!

I would like to retract my definition of homosexuality, it is more accurately an attraction to a member of the same gender WITHIN THE SAME SPECIES. Humans are FAR from the only animal that displays homosexual attraction.

That being said, someone taking the "opposed to nature" defense would have to supply some explanation as to why animals would also make exhibit "wrong" behavior, and how is it that they could be wired incorrectly, seeing as how fruit-flies (as one example of an alternative species that displays homosexuality) hardly have a high enough level on consciousness to CHOOSE to be attracted to other fruit-flies of the same gender.

HI,
thats exactly what I wondered a few months ago.
look http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AugryQXNTmVC4M5cHJSGUdzty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20070519230319AAjhnBC
anyway, the answers I got varied, but overall apart from religious reasons the only reasons I was given were that it violated tradition.
What I realized is that anything which advocates change from the familiarity and the status quo, is treated with hostility.
Think about it, people grow up with certain values and try to hold on to them, a classic example that comes to mind is integration. People weren't used to interacting with colored people, all their life they had grown up being told not to.
Additionally people tend to have romanticized views of their past, and often blame change-catalysts for the unwanted problems in society, ex: "gays are responsible for the moral breakdown of society".

rapsson2003, I have heard your argument before.
People often claim that homosexuality is against nature and is therefore wrong. I disagree with this viewpoint for several reasons. First of all, humans don't follow nature, for example take 1) 'the Pill': by regulating our hormones we essentially stop the natural fertility cycle, 2) we have sex with no reason to procreate, 3) Humans engage in oral sex. Last time I checked the mouth was used for eating, yet many people don't consider that unnatural. Clearly "something has gone 'wrong' with the make up of" Heterosexuals.

I believe homosexuality is 'wrong' and I said that with regard to the other person who asked the same question.

Upon having a few moments to think it through, this is one reason why I think it's 'wrong'.

In the strictest biological sense male and female were designed to be attracted to one another for the purpose of procreation. Our base human instincts are such that, without the pomp of emotional ties, females are attracted to particular males in order to breed viable offspring.

The thing that makes homosexuality 'wrong' is the pure fact that couples that are attracted to the same sex cannot reproduce.

If we are to keep everything on a biologically functional level, then something has gone 'wrong' with the make up of the homosexual persons that prevents them from desiring a person of the opposite sex for the purpose of procreation.

If you are to add emotions to the mix, then the discussion will morph into something else.

Additionally you cannot completely remove sex from the question because it is an integral part of homo or hetero sexuality and those relationships. I agree that particular sexual activity is not exclusively homosexual in nature.

EDIT: to add, my answer isn't with regard to homosexual couples wanting to have kids, this is an answer devoid of the need to include emotions.
Additionally, we are not overpopulating the earth. Statistics show we have a consistently declining birth rate, and a top heavy elderly population across the board.

Now hit it right on the nose. Lovely question, well put. I say it again, homosexuality is not wrong.

Even including sex in the question, anal sex is not exclusively a homosexual act.

EDIT an argument appeared below that it causes us to have less repoductive pairs. Bearing in mind that we are over populated we need to have less children.

Now if that guy knew what he was talking about then he would also know that many homosexuals actually endure a hetrosexual relationship, whereby they also have children and they hide their homosexuality away.

Preference for the same sex does not mean not wanting children.

I've no issue with it... But I know that society's view of lesbians has shaped the way I think, and is the major reason I hate myself deep inside for dating another female. It's not a good feeling, especially when you know it's not how you really feel, it's just an imprint of the views you grew up around...

Broroy - That would be because most Atheists are more open minded than Christians.

LOL, I love you Acid. Sorry I was busy pasting all the harmful effects of homosexuality in the other question. I'm sure it will never be read and most people will just assume I hate, but I do have to stand up for what I think is right.
The studies I posted relate to more problems than just the effects of sodomy. There are also several studies that suggest domestic violence rates are higher among homosexual couples, especially lesbians.

I don't hate anyone. I want everyone to enjoy a long, satisfying life and the research I've read indicates that homosexuality is harmful, so there ya go.

I doubt your definition of homeosexuality as I believe its a choice the same way as heterosexuality or bisexuality or any other sexuality out there is a choice as well. Nothing is instict about attraction. the only thing thats instinct is eating, sleeping, crying.

Hiya , you wrote -''So I would like to ask the question myself: without resorting to religious reasons, why is homosexuality wrong?''

If your not interested in the religious answers , then don't put the question in this catagory.

Attraction manifests itself in the form of sex (sexual attraction), bottom line. You cannot remove that element from the picture by eliminating "anal sex" and "homosexual sex" from the subject of homosexuality.
