No one can say for sure, most will argue that it was laid down the second World War II ended, like the foundations for World War II were laid down the moment World War I ended. It's possible, that the worldwide unrest will lead to World War III, if even likely, but not necessarily. The reason there seems to be more unrest in the world presently than in past decades is due to media coverage which can basically get anywhere now, compared to the Cold War, things are pretty peaceful presently.

The foundations for "World War III" were laid long ago, at the end of World War I, when the Middle East was divided up and Israel was given to the Jews and taken from the Arabs (mostly Muslim) who have resided there for years. World War III will likely start in the Middle East. Many countries have serious investments there and instability, coupled with a recent surge in the popularity of radical Islam. However, religion WILL NOT be the factor. World War III will not be a crusade. Even the Crusades were fought for political and economic reasons (namely the pope wanted to establish his authority after the Great Schism and there were many rare goods to be found). The confrontations between the Israelis and the Palestinians is a political fight, with religion being used as a facade and an excuse (it looks better saying you are fighting for your holy land than it does to say you are fighting for political control of an area).
The Middle East is already politically unstable. It has always been this way. In every country of the Middle East, there has been a history of repeated coups overthrowing the previous dictatorship and replacing it with their own dictatorship. It has been this way for 12,000 years. The recent unrest in the Middle East, partially sparked by the U.S. interventions there, have put all manner of people vying for power into action. Anyone who knows history will not be surprised when a struggle for control happens again... in an area heavily invested in by the major superpowers - Israel.
Eventually the peace will end and the Arabs will try to claim what is theirs. America, Britain and many other "Zionist" nations will likely back Israel up. They have serious investments in Israel and the "peace plan," which is also a political facade for control of the oil in the Middle East. Other countries will defend their national interests (such as getting fair-priced petroleum) and back up the Arab countries who have OPEC. Unfortunately this war will only last as long as one side begins to seriously lose. At this point, Nuclear weapons will be brought out. The victor will be the countries who are less radioactive than the rest.
Technically speaking, this will actually be World War II, as the traditional "World War I" and "World War II" were the same war, two exceedingly violent halves divided by a short-lived period of false peace (there was no peace. The first battles of World War II happened practically a few years after the end of World War I).

If we don't actively work to create peace... WWIII may be inevitable.
