Did anyone stop to think that for a work of antiquity in a time when women were generally not considered anything more than a commodity to be bought or sold, that the Bible affords women more rights and responsibilities than can be expected?

The Bible is a literary compilation that records times, events, cultural traditions and beliefs -- as a work in and of itself it can't be held responsible for how the 'past' treated 'his' women.

That said, several famous women are recorded throughout the Bible's history and in the New Testament a man is called to love his wife and die for her like Christ died loved 'the church'.
